The last Mini Cooper S R56 JCW to be produced featured BMW/Peugeot’s N18/EP6CDX engine. A redesigned and significantly improved cylinder head is what set it apart compared to the pre-existing N14, that features variable valve lift and twin camshaft dephasers for adjustable timing on both intake and exhaust cams. This was probably the best gasoline engine in the 1.6 liter range of any car manufacturer in the world at the time. While the JCW’s power levels were at 208hp stock,
A testament to how powerful the engine block is, is the french RCZ-R and 308 GTi that boast a stock power of 270hp with pretty much the same engine but a larger turbocharger on top. Which makes it an extremely tunable engine for the JCW!
